This is a D-Surface or grinding project for the home building contractor Al Hochalter of Building Concepts.

We ground down the center areas of the driveway panels and left a small border of plain concrete. At the meeting of those 2 different finishes we sawed 45-degree architectural sawcuts to dress it up.

The aggregate is the standard pit run gravel or river rock, which is a mix of many different kinds and colors of rock that is really pretty when ground down or exposed.

Close up the rock is quite colorful yet from a distance the slabs usually have a beige or tan appearance overall which generally does not clash with any color elements in the front facade of the home.

An alternative to the use of standard rock is granite, which reduces the risk of shale pops and is available in pink and a black and white combination with an overall darker appearance.
